The Gujarat High Court ruled that 19 people were convicted in the 2002 riot case in Ode town in Anand district in Gujarat.In this case, the trial court has been sentenced to life imprisonment and the High Courts have declared them guilty.In the 2002 riots, a special court found 23 people convicted and 18 were sentenced to life imprisonment and five others were sentenced to seven years' imprisonment.

The accused have appealed to the high court against the trial court judgment. The Special Investigation Agency investigating the case has sought death penalty for the accused. The bench of Justice Akil Kureshi and BN Kariya reserved the verdict after hearing the arguments in April. Two days after the Godhra train burning incident in 2002 (March 1, 2002), 23 Muslims were burnt alive in Ode town in Anand district. In the 47 cases, the trial court has convicted 23 people. One died during the trial.
